General History

For many years this Model 65 was displayed in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry after a well-publicized 1951 race from Chicago to New York City. The race pitted steam power against the internal combustion engine, with 76-year-old Jack Brause driving the steamer and 70-year-old Rube De Launty behind the wheel of a 1911 Stoddard-Dayton!

A memorable moment captured on film showed a helicopter refueling the Stanley near Buffalo. According to race reports, the cars ran neck and neck across the country, but the Stanley steamed up Broadway to victory.

Our Model’s History

Rob Reilly, the first Executive Director of the Friends of Auburn Heights (FAH), purchased this car with the help of Tom Marshall in the mid1980s. He generously gifted it to FAH shortly before his passing in December 2022.
